I delivered this presentation at the 2013 California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO) annual conference. Technology has vastly improved our ability to acquire and send data. Data that is well organized and classified becomes knowledge. Data without organization is confusing. This presentation provided tips on how to simplify information like budget documents and basic instructions that are unnecessarily written in legalese. Methods for translation ranged from plain-talk guidelines, developing a narrative, and data visualization.
