On April 11, 2016, I presented a 4-hour DSLR 101 workshop to a few dozen people at the 2016 California Association of Public Information Officials annual conference. The biggest challenge was addressing a large crowd with various skill levels without slowing the presentation down and losing engagement. The presentation focused on mechanics (getting to a where the user will feel comfortable exploring photography outside of the AUTO function), design (learning basic design principles and how to use them to create the photographs the user wants to take), and story (learning how you can tell a story with one photo or many photos.) I also went over some advanced tricks for fun, like using a reversing ring to turn your prime lens into a macro lens. For example, the macro photo below of an egg from my fridge.
While it lacks the added bonus of my audio presentation, feel free to check out my powerpoint from the conference to learn a little more about how to take DSLR photos.
